Thank you! Follow up question of something that didn't occur to me yesterday, but might also be an issue. I studied abroad this summer and wanted to visit a nearby country. However, I was held up at the border and sent back (deported essentially) because I forgot my passport. Will this show up on a criminal search? I remember the officer just saying that all he had to do was send me back but idk, but nothing bad or illegal happened, I just forgot my passport.

Employers usually outsource background checks to third parties. The way it works is that the background check company calls and asks to speak to whomever you listed as a supervisor or some member of HR or asks you for a W-2 or 1099. I listed a business that I founded in undergrad on my resume when I moved out of banking, and the background check company actually called me asking me to verify myself (clearly not the brightest tools in the shed). I had a buddy who helped me run the business, so I gave the background check company his cell phone number, so they called him, he gave verbal confirmation, and that was that.

You're fine. Just give them the guy's number and that'll be that.
