Banking in Houston that's NOT energy?
Can we get a comprehensive list of places that are not solely focused on Energy / O&G?
I want to lateral to Houston (personal / family ties) but do not want to pigeon hole myself into energy at all (also don't have any interest). I have a background in food & bev and general industrials.
I would like to stay in banking regardless of the firm's size as long as it's not energy.
0. Dallas got a couple spots but houston has nothing non-energy thats even half reputable.
I know what's in Dallas. I don't want Dallas.
You must not be from Texas. The drive from Dallas to Houston is like driving from NYC to Richmond, VA.
Not very feasible when you want to see family on the weekend... Aka the reason why I want to lateral to Houston (as mentioned in the post).
man I really feel like I have a ton of particular knowledge that would benefit you here but you seem insanely intolerable and I don't want to work with you and I don't want anyone I know in Houston to work with you
Damn, that's a shame. Just frustrated that no one can understand a simple request for info. Instead the first comments are "go to Dallas" like I don't know that Dallas is less energy focused.
Just because I'm from Houston doesn't mean I understand the finance scene indepth and know all the small boutiques (as mentioned I don't care about size) that don't focus on energy.

people get your request. People don't get how you're this much of an intolerable person
we wouldn't piss on you on the street. That's in NY, LA, Chicago, Houston or whatever- you are insufferable and not worth talking with. To be clear.
People aren't being rude, they are telling you the reality and you are being vicious to people taking time to help you. If you already know everything, don't ask for advice on here.
There are approximately 2-3 non-energy IB firms and they are all DEEP in the lowest of the middle market and may still do energy deals.
There are some small hedge funds and PE firms I would look into instead.
Can I please dm you for some questions?
Hello, I just came across this thread. I’m currently still a student but interested in banking. I have family ties to Texas so considering that as a place to trying to get internship / move full time. Alongside other major cities. Would love to get your thoughts on finance landscape in Texas, especially comparing the different opportunities in each city.
Yea just move to Dallas, plenty of non- energy teams / generalist PE funds there.
“Does the energy capital of the US have any banks that don’t do energy”
"San Francisco is the world's tech capital, do they have anything other than tech jobs?"
Yes, yes they do...
im incoming at jeff houston. There is nothing non energy. That simple.
Okay smart ass - let me know what bank u find that has a non energy group in houston
Could go for energy transition - a lot different than O&G and has some niches similar to industrials. Jefferies has a strong houston practice for ET
Yeah — understand transition is a little different and am open to exploring the nuances there but I know Jeffries is not where I want to be. I'd rather be unemployed under I-10 than be in that office. Friends say it's absolutely terrible and I'm already at one of the sweatiest places on the street as is.
Woodrock & co. is the only thing that comes to mind.
Gulf Star does middle market non-energy but the posters here aren't wrong that Houston is a very energy focused city. I know that's probably not the answer you wanted to hear but it is what it is.
I know it's energy focused. I am from Houston.
I don't have enough fingers to count all the friends I have at various BBs and UMM banks in Houston. Yes, they are in energy groups.
There are 100% non-energy focused groups in Houston though, I just don't know them all. That's precisely why I suggested we start a comprehensive list. Instead I get a bunch of smart asses telling a native Texan that Houston is energy focused. Must be a bunch of bottom-tier analysts because they clearly did not understand the request.
You asked something stupid as fuck and then got mad when you got an anwer lmao. I don't want you anywhere near my bank. Please say other stupid shit so you can give yourself away and we can all spread you around as a joke. thx
Scotia has Power in Houston. Moelis has Cleantech.
WoodRock, Statesman and GulfStar are the 3 non energy banks in town
Thank you for a legit answer. Much appreciated.
Yeah believe Moelis has REGL but correct me if I’m wrong
Moelis only has Energy and Clean Tech in Houston.
.
Easier to get you monkeys with capacity to do the research for me...
Lazard at one point covered airlines in Houston.
lower ur tone bro. You want to work at some random lmm firm that probably wont even take you. You sound insufferable. Wish you the worst!!!
I know Scotia has P&U, MUFG has sponsor finance and direct lending, Moelis has Greentech, Jeff has energy transition, and select few have project finance(socgen, maybe MUFG, others). I'm sure there's boutiques with more but that's all I can think of top of head.
There's a lot more options across Dallas (Healthcare, RE, PCA, Energy, TMT, FIG, P&U, Debt Advisory, Structured Products, ECM, Rx, prob more) and Austin (TMT, Consumer, RE, prob more).
go to dallas lol
Feel free to PM me. Have a good deal of insight that could be helpful to you
Happy to help you out here. Shoot me a pm
