Banking to Hedge Fund - how do you do it?

Before you say it’s been asked before - there needs to be an update on it. I haven’t seen a clear thread that’s relevant. How do you do it? Is it only through PE mega funds exits? Also, what positions do ex-bankers typically hold at hedge funds?

I believe this is a case of the blind leading the blind. It remains a fact that distressed and activist funds, when hiring, target PE over banking groups. Yes, people do go from banking groups to hf, but this is somewhere between undergrad hiring and PE hiring in terms of frequency (effectively the average of the two).

PJT RSSG is not actually well known for direct exits into HF. Most which do occur is a case of PJT analysts being among the best on the street as opposed to the pursuit of rx bankers.

There is a larger issue in this question being ignored. HFs are not homogeneous. In many ways distressed hedge funds are closer to pe funds than they are macro or emerging markets funds. Gs TMT places well in tech focused funds because they produce industry specialists. Truly I think if you were to look at which groups had the most hf exits it would likely be O&G or resources  due to low supply in this area labour wise and relatively high demand.
