Being international sucks...
I go to a non-ivy (but top10) school and the BB bank im at had on-campus recruiting earlier this year. I was bored at work today so I was just looking for something to read in our database, and I came across a folder which had like all the resumes/evaluations for the campus recruits. It was interesting to see how detailed the forms were; they had things like "how would you rank this candidate amongs peers" etc...
Well curiousity got the better of me and i dug up the interview evaluation for a friend who was rejected. What was surprising was that all the people that interviewed her gave her very favorable reviews, and she was ranked #3 out of 15 or so people who made the superday from our school. I was actually ranked #5, and everyone ranked from #1 to #6 except for her was given an offer for SA. that leads me to believe that her international student status had a significant part in the selection process
for those who actually recruit, is this true?
how do you have access to the recruiting folders?
It doesn't make scene..
Highly recommend you get as involved with recruiting as possible - provides great insight to your own future job search, great potential alibi (depending on circumstances) if you need to beg off a shitty project and overall get to get out of the office every now and then.

These files were pretty conspicuous at my firm. They had folders like "XXXXXResumes" "XXXXXInterviews" (XXXXX was my school) on a public hard drive
That's funny, they should keep these files private, don't you think? I think it's the responsibility of the IT guys.
Anyways, didn't you mention in previous posts that you are attending an ivy league?
international only matters in the US. it's too hard to get a Visa but I don't understand people who are obsessed with working only in New York. So many offices in the world are generating more revenue especially this year and offer big opportunities
ive found a bunch of resumes myself on public drives.
hey indian-banker, how hard is it for internationals to land positions in HK? are the immigration laws in HK as draconian as the ones in US?
To work in HK is simple... as long as the company sponsors u its no prob.. as long as u earn over HKD 20,000 a month u will get the Visa... the bank will do all the paperwork for you through a law firm..
Well there's a kid from my group who got a FT hire who did not get his Visa, and this was after interning with the group last summer! Good old American immigration law at work...
Luckily the bank moved him to their London office, but I have heard of several kids losing offers without a Visa. Company doesn't want to commit lots of money to a kid who might not even be able to work for them I guess. It sucks, but unless/until the rules change I can see why int'l kids end up at a disadvantage.
Take from an International student.... "it sucks" , somehow it is understandable, nevertheless.... "I dream that one day..... international students will not be discriminated and judged by their visa status...but by their character"
I love how the one guy says who cares about NYC and their visa issues, just go to work in HK, as long as the company sponsors you and does your HK visa stuff lol.
H1 Visa's are not cheap or easy to get. Banking get so many apps it really doesn't make sense for them. Most F500 companies have no problem issuing visa's.
I feel great when I interview with firms that do not hire internationals...eliminates the competition....yellowmen and yellowwomen, please go back to where you came from and work there.
Don't worry you can always work in somalia.
