Best pathway to IB

I am currently 14 and in high school. I dream of one day being an MD at an investment bank, and I was wondering what the best option in would be? I am looking at IB apprenticeships as well as just a finance degree at uni and was wondering which would help me progress further? The apprenticeship comes with an applied finance degree at a russel group uni. Also as soon as I finish an apprenticeship can I do an MBA because I will have work experience? And finally 5-10 years down the line so past apprentices get paid the same as those from university?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's a strategic approach to your goal of becoming an MD at an investment bank:

  1. Education Path: Both pathways you're considering, an apprenticeship with an applied finance degree from a Russell Group university and a traditional finance degree, can lead to successful careers in investment banking. The apprenticeship offers practical experience alongside academic learning, which is highly valued in the industry. A traditional finance degree, especially from a prestigious university, also holds significant value and often includes opportunities for internships that provide similar practical experience.

  2. MBA Consideration: Typically, pursuing an MBA is more about when you feel ready to take that step rather than immediately after an apprenticeship. Most top MBA programs prefer candidates who have substantial professional experience, usually around 3-5 years, as this enhances the learning environment with real-world perspectives. Completing an apprenticeship and working for a few years could indeed position you well for an MBA program.

  3. Long-Term Salary Prospects: In the long run, the salary and progression in investment banking can depend more on performance, networking, and continued professional development rather than whether you entered through an apprenticeship or a university degree. Both paths can lead to high-level positions if you are committed, perform well, and continue to build your skills and network.

In summary, both paths have their merits. Your choice might depend on your preference for immediate industry exposure versus a more traditional academic route. Continual learning and networking will be key components of your career progression, regardless of the path you choose.
