Best way to memorize models for interviews
I have done countless 3 statement models and DCF models and a handful of M&A and LBO models (none for actual internships). After a week of doing them repeatedly, I tend to forget how to do them a few weeks/months later. What am I doing wrong? Any advice?
No clue how to do anything modeling related, incoming freshman but for memorization techniques i would recommend.
Switching the ways you study
Ex:
Try recording yourself teaching someone how it would be done as if it was a youtube video
Make a quizlet and play various modes with flashcards with the steps
Practicing the task
Index Cards
Reading Outloud
Creating a studyguide
Switching your location: Studying in different locations has proven to make it easier to absorb any information.
Hope this helps
Mind giving more color on the "changing location" piece
Do the same thing in a different place
What a thoughtful response! I can tell your big time
All that really matters is how the historical info and assumptions flow through the model. Draw a diagram of the flow of information between driver + historical and projection. The diagram should include which projections become drivers for other projections (ie your future cash balances will impact how much you draw on your revolver and that revolver amount impacts interest expense etc).
Worry less about "memorizing" and understand the concepts. Sure, you can memorize the perfect answer on how depreciation rolls through the three statements, but ask yourself why does it work this way? Talking out loud always helps. If you memorize answers, you'll most likely get tripped up in interviews. Learn the concepts
