Best way to prepare for 2026 IB SA role?

Just thought I would put this up right now to jump the boat and stay ahead a little bit.

Going to be joining a reputable shop in a T1 city in one of their coverage groups and was wondering what materials apart from WSP and basic reading materials should I be using to stay ahead of the game here and that would best prep me for the summer analyst role to get that return offer?

To prepare effectively for your 2026 IB Summer Analyst (SA) role and position yourself for a return offer, here’s a structured approach based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Master Financial Modeling and Valuation

  • Courses: Enroll in financial modeling courses like Wall Street Prep (WSP) or similar programs. These are highly recommended for building a strong foundation in:
    • 3-statement modeling
    • Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) analysis
    • Comparable company analysis (Comps)
    • Precedent transactions
  • Bootcamps: Consider attending WSO’s Financial Modeling & Valuation 2-Day Bootcamp (e.g., the one on Sep 23-24). These intensive sessions are designed to give you hands-on experience.

2. Familiarize Yourself with Industry Tools

  • CapIQ and Bloomberg: If your school or firm provides access, learn how to use tools like CapIQ for running comps and transaction searches. Familiarity with these platforms will set you apart.
  • Excel Proficiency: Download Excel templates from WSO’s library and practice building models from scratch. Excel shortcuts and efficiency are critical in IB.

3. Stay Updated on Business News

  • Read WSJ, Barron’s, and FT daily to stay informed about market trends, M&A activity, and industry-specific news. If you’re joining a coverage group, focus on news related to that sector.

4. Behavioral and Technical Interview Prep

  • Mock Interviews: Schedule mock interviews with professionals through WSO to refine your behavioral and technical responses.
  • Investment Banking Interview Prep: Use WSO’s interview prep resources to review common technical questions and behavioral scenarios.

5. Networking and Mentorship

  • Connect with current analysts and associates at your firm to understand their expectations and gather insights about the group’s culture and workflow.
  • Join LinkedIn groups or forums that focus on your coverage group’s industry to stay engaged.

6. Build a Strong Work Ethic

  • Develop habits like attention to detail, time management, and the ability to handle feedback constructively. These soft skills are just as important as technical knowledge.

7. Additional Resources

  • WSO Company Database: Research your firm and competitors to understand deal flow and positioning.
  • Resume Reviews: Get your resume reviewed by professionals to ensure it’s polished and tailored for IB.

By combining these resources and strategies, you’ll not only be well-prepared for your SA role but also demonstrate the initiative and skills needed to secure that return offer.

congrats on the offer! first - try to brush up/improve your excel skills (a lot of good online training programs which can teach you the need to knows before hitting the desk)

second - try to network with more of the employees at the bank/group you’re gonna be joining so you get more of a sense of culture & get to know the team before you start (especially helpful if you’re generalist because it’ll be easier to know which coverage teams are good fit for you when ranking them - be mindful and dont spam them)

third - enjoy your time in school & live life (take this time to find whatever youre interested in - dont just be a finance hardo, learn and explore something youre interested in so you can be more interesting on the job when connecting with other interns and juniors/seniors on the team so you stand out)

congrats! study the intricacies of your coverage group (i.e. read industry 10-ks, ER initiation reports, etc). will be useful context and conducive for more thoughtful work and discussions once you hit the desk. good luck!! :)
