Big 4 Partner Opp in Tech Consulting, are they capable?

Hi all,

Thanks for reading this firstly and I want an honest answer please!

My educational background is a Top 30 BBA and a Top 20 MBA on the West Coast, both private universities

I started my career in Finance working with GS starting as an Associate. I was recruited out of there by Deloitte and EY, but realized I hated working as an Associate and so then I quickly moved to tech, still within the Finance industry. I built a pretty good reputation doing that and was again recruited by Deloitte and Accenture. I turned down Deloitte again and went with Accenture.

I again built up a good reputation with ACN as a Management Consultant with my teams consistenly hitting metrics, KPIs and goals.

However, my dream has always been to make Partner at a Big 4 or maybe McKinsey

I got pulled aside to join a boutique firms where I served as an MD for a boutique firm and did really well again. Not to sound "c.o.cky" but I built up some really, really good traction and exposure for them during my time there, constantly exceeding my quotas and revenue goals. Although not a big name and without much resources, what I DID enjoy here was the opp to build up my reputation more and to diversify my portfolio and network. I probably had about 20 - 25 or so F500 clients during my time there in various Verticals.

I have been pursued by 2 of the Big 4, TCS, and a few other large tech consulting firms to come in as Partner now and to bring in my portfolio. One of the Big 4 is "fairly new" to Technology consulting and generally considered "the weakest of the Big 4". So you can go ahead and guess who it is.

Now, a lot of my cF500 clients say as the addage goes that "no one ever got fired for going Big 4", but they all know that they generally "fail" in technology implementations..

Even with that said, ACN, Cognizant, etc they all fail too.

Is this a good idea to join a Big 4 where there is chance that they could fail on a Project? I understand that "no one will get fired"... but if I join a Big 4 and bring in XYZ F500 client for $1MM+ deal and they fail...then that hurts MY repuation

Also since I would be coming in external should I redirect it and say I'd rather go MD first as I understand that the compensation package is different and probably safer as MD for now at least...

I don’t have a ton to offer on this, but I work at a Big 4. If they offer partner you should definitely take it. If you go MD there is a solid chance you never make partner. At the Big 4 I work at the partner comp is the same for everyone for the first 5 years. The partners come in a a certain level (may be around $350k) then they all get the same amount of new shares each year for the first 5. After the 5 year period your share increases/decreases are based on performance. If you go Big 4 prepare to stay for the long haul. The pension doesn’t vest until your a partner for 10 years. The pension is solid though (25% of the average of your 3 highest paid years into perpetuity).
