Bulge Bracket Background Check - Dates of Employment

Hey all - recently got an opportunity to rejoin a bulge bracket bank in their DCM group after a few years out of the industry. I realize that on my last banking job, I accidentally put my end date as a month after I actually resigned. Will this pop up on my background check and am I cooked? Do I bring this up now?

Thanks!

Based on the most helpful WSO content, discrepancies in employment dates can indeed be flagged during background checks, especially if the bank uses a third-party firm to verify your work history. However, this doesn't necessarily mean you're "cooked." Here's what you should consider:

  1. Proactively Address the Issue: If you notice the error before the background check begins, it's often better to correct it upfront. Reach out to HR or the recruiting team, explain the mistake, and provide the correct dates. Transparency can work in your favor and shows integrity.

  2. Wait and See Approach: Some WSO threads suggest waiting to see if the discrepancy is flagged. If it is, you can then explain it as an honest mistake. However, this approach carries more risk, as it might appear you were trying to hide something.

  3. Severity of the Discrepancy: A one-month difference is relatively minor and can often be explained as a clerical error. It's unlikely to derail your offer if you handle it professionally.

  4. Background Check Process: Remember, most background checks focus on verifying employment dates, titles, and reasons for leaving. If your previous employer only confirms dates and doesn't elaborate, the impact might be minimal.

If you're unsure, leaning towards honesty and addressing the issue now is generally the safer route. Good luck!
