Bulger Partners Boston: anyone heard of them?

Does anyone on here know anything about Bulger Partners? No, I'm not kidding, this is a firm not a falacy, or a firm phallic? Anyway, they are based in Boston and appear to be a hodgepodge of some banking (mostly done in europe), some consulting, and some small time principle investing (offerpop... really?)

Anyway, just wondering if anybody had any insight as to what really goes on behind those bulging doors? Darts? Shuffleboard? ... ... Deals? Do they recruit on campus? Do you get to say you're a banker? Or a consultant? And how prestigious is that?

I networked in with one of the partners here back in January. Had a phone interview and was then invited in for a face to face with two partners. Had a consulting case that I didn't understand very well, but in retrospect it was not that difficult...I was a nervous wreck and really froze up on some basic math...as you can imagine I didn't receive an offer. I thought it was fairly rude that they did not respond to my inquires regarding the process afterward. It took about 3 weeks and 4 phone calls for me to get someone on the phone to tell me I didn't receive an offer and provide me with some feedback.

My impression was that they were very nice people, and the company is really on an upward trend. One of the partners explained to me during the interview that he expected revenues to triple over the next year, and that they were in the process of expanding to a bigger Boston office. They are growing and plan to add more young employees. Like peinvestor said, the partners all have very solid bios, some in high operating roles with well known tech companies, some with other well known consulting firms.

The way it was explained to me was that roughly 60% of your time as an analyst would be devoted to consulting duties, as that is their principal source of business. With the rest allocated to banking and PE. Typically they will look to co-invest in a banking/consulting client if they believe that the business is poised for growth (obviously). This is a firm that I would have absolutely loved to work for...I think they provide their analysts with some very marketable experience, not many can claim knowledge of consulting, banking, and PE practices so early in their career. Coincidentally, I went and had an interview at a PE firm in the area and one of their associates came from the analyst program here, so they definitely have exit opps.

Hope this helps. Sorry for the length.

Interview had a decent amount of fit questions. Things like, what is your method for learning new skills? etc... They also asked me a decent amount about my internships. I was interviewing for the associate role not a senior role so not sure how yours might differ. I would imagine that they will focus more on your experience. Consulting case had to do with a tech company that offers education services to colleges. Management has noticed that their revenues are starting to become stagnant, what ways can they increase revenues (this is the easy part) can recommend increasing price, acquiring a competitor, expanding product line, expanding target population, etc... The next question delved into the topic of raising the price on existing clients. Noting that current clients are retained on average for x # of years and therefore you can determine how many clients you have at a given point in time. If prices are increased 10% and it is believed that this will decrease # of years a client returns for business. does it make sense to move ahead with the price increase? This is a simple problem with fractions where you look at the current case as revenue of 1 and the proposed increase as revenue of 1.10. (This was a while ago so I don't remember specifics of the question too well and I'm not sure how common/easy this question is considered to be in the consulting world. As I said, I had and still have no consulting experience as I took a job in IB).

Other factors to consider...make sure you understand the tech space. Know about emerging trends regarding SaaS, etc... For example, better know that Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems a few years back in an effort to cross sell both hardware and software and that many people have not seen this as a very good move for them. I don't work in tech either so my knowledge of that is pretty limited but I did a great deal of research on the industry prior to my itnerview.

Hope this helps.

I suppose you were contacted by a London headhunter. They have been pushing for analyst positions in this company for quite some time. According to Mergermarket, did only 2 deals last year in Europe: Indicia Group (sponsor deal) and Broner Metals Solutions (strategic deal)
