Burnt Out - Parents will take care of me

Hi,

I am extremely burnt out after 18 months on the job. Been burnt out for a while, but stuck around to not look sus when interviewing. I am 6-7 final rounds in and nothing to show for it. Networking is not working, no one responds.

I don't want to do PE. I want to buy a small business and test my luck. My parents will support me, and the money I save in a HCOL city is negligible. I also like living in a suburban area, the large city life is not for me. I learned everything that I needed to in this role after 9 months, I work in a front office role at a 2nd tier international bank. (SMBC/Nomura/UBS)

What should I do? What are thoughts about quitting with nothing lined up? I will be productive at home.

P.S: They hate me and want me out. Bonus will be shit.

It sounds like your friends have the dream life having their own small business.

Is it even worth staying in banking long term if it's just for money? Pay is lower and the opportunity cost to start your own thing is much lower now compared to the Lehman days. A few vending machines or car washes can get someone more flexibility and higher pay pretty easily. Banking is no longer as stable of a way to make an upper middle class lifestyle for yourself.

Congrats on UBS

and if you have the safety net, just GTFO and don’t look back

Dude, start looking. Burn out is a sign that it’s not for you and it’s a bitch to shake. Save PTO for interviews. A business would be great and you understand the financial mechanics. If you want to start/buy a business then start doing some work for yourself, look for opportunities that can set you up. Keep in mind that you can continue to look at a company to purchase from a new desk so it may make sense to find something new and figure out where you want to end up.

Always remember they can drop you at anytime. You’ve put in over a year, you can exit and if it comes up just mention that the environment was wrong.

Only two sources I trust, Glenn Beck and singing woodland creatures.
