Buying mattress as a first year
So spent all day going to different mattress stores and found some options I liked at ~700. But the reviews are all TERRIBLE - none of the mattresses hold up past a few months.
I'm moving to NYC from out-of-state, and am unsure if I will stay in NYC past my analyst stint so trying to figure out how much to spend.
What brands do you guys recommend and how much did you spend as a first year?
EDIT:
Ended up spending a little more than my budget with a SleepEz Select Hybrid at $1050. Never got to try it out but it was one of the few beds I found that didn't have a bunch of fake reviews and most of the feedback was very good with minimal bad reviews. I'll update once I get the mattress.
~700 - Online Mattress - bunch of brands out there most of them are pretty good.
One pro tip - mattresses are sold at over 50% GM. Therefore, you should try and haggle when you go to check out. Considering a solid mattress can cost $2-5k, I would definitely negotiate.
Another pro tip:
Go to a mattress firm and ask about their warehouse deals. Any time someone buys a new mattress and returns it within the 90-day trial period mattress firm checks that it is in practically mint condition, cleans it, repackages it and then sells it at a 50%+ discount.
When I was an incoming analyst, I did the same thing and got a 1300 mattress for ~500 all in.
Great value if you are up to it.
Most of the online "mattress in a box" companies are pretty good. I've purchased multiple (Leesa and Bear) and both were well worth it (slight preference for the Leesa). Especially during your analyst years, do not undervalue good quality sleep. Think of a good mattress as an investment. As a general life rule, don't cheap out on things you put weight on (shoes, mattress, etc.) - spending up for something of quality will last substantially longer.
Agreed. I chose Casper and love it. So easy to disassemble/reassemble when you have to move.
Bold assumption that you'll be sleeping
$300 on an all foam zinus or leesa whatever is on Amazon.
difference between a $700 bed and $300 bed is minimal. You see differences at $900-$1500 (avocado, Brooklyn, helix, etc.)
All the cheap Amazon ones have fiberglass in them and are being sued, look it up.
Not worth the risk of the fiberglass seeping through and getting all over your room. Prob isn’t great for your lungs either.
Ok get a nectar for $4000 then bro
LOL.
Idk man…just go on Amazon and buy a mattress.
Bit of a different take - and this was on an associate salary - but I sprung for the branded tempurpedic and don't regret it one bit. When you're just flat out exhausted, or trying to chill out after a long weekend, to just kick it on something that's really nice and comfortable can do wonders. They always say - spend money on things that separate you from the ground, and I think a mattress falls in that category.
Sealy was surprisingly very good and less than $600
I got a $250 mattress from Amazon and is just as good as my girlfriend’s $700 mattress deal from Sealy
Purple. 2k. Won’t regret it.
Buy purple
Costco and IKEA still works for me and my family
Just moved to a new city and purchased a Zinus mattress on Amazon. Great quality green tea memory foam mattress at an excellent price point (300-400). Not too soft, not too firm.
You spend a third of your life in bed, don't cheap out on it
Words of wisdom ^
To be fair when you work in IB it's closer to a fourth or fifth
