California to Houston?

Hey everyone, so I'm currently in the Military and the plan is to get out, finish my degree and then get into a B school so I can eventually go to Houston. Now, currently, I'm living in Cali and I plan on transferring into one of the UC schools to finish my degree in Finance. Do any schools in Cali translate into some kind of Semi for Houston? Does it matter if the school is a semi as long as I get into a top 10 or MBA business schools">M7 MBA? I figure people will give me some leeway on going to a top state school, vice a good private due to Military obligations and I'm fighting the war on my age so I can get into a solid B school.

Also, since we're on to topic of Houston, what are some solid banks/firms there that would be good to look into and is it hard to try to get a job in a state that's on the other side of the country of where you're trying to finish school. Did anyone here do a b-school into Houston or get their Bachelors in a different state?

Thanks for your time everyone.

I did my bachelors in the mid-west, and now work on the east coast, but I'm a Houston native. Energy is the dominant sector in Houston, so be prepared for that. The trifecta of Houston energy bulge bracket investment banks is Credit Suisse, Barclays, and Citi. There are some great energy boutiques as well including Tudor Pickering Holt and Co and Simmons and Co International.

I think there is a preference to hire native Texans because they are viewed as low flight risks / want to be in Texas instead of just getting on a platform to then try and peace out to NYC.

Just me 2 cents - I interviewed with both TPH and Simmons ( although no offers) - I liked Simmons best though and would have taken an offer there over a BB.

It'll take some work to get to Houston from the West Coast. Houston mainly recruits Texas schools, Vanderbilt, and some NE. It is possible, however. If you network effectively you will get a shot, especially if you get into UCLA or Berkeley.

The top BBs in Houston are Barclays, Credit Suisse, and now Citi. Good boutiques are TPH and Simmons as mentioned above. Evercore is new to Houston (~3-4 years), but they are killing it (they did Kinder-El Paso). Jefferies is strong in the MM space.

Thanks for the info so far, guys. I've worked nuclear power for 9 years and I'm trying to switch into IB, I figure that since the energy sector is in Houston they'll enjoy the experience in the field. When it comes to applying for an MBA program if I could get into Wharton or Columbia would it be best to go with one of them over Rice or McCombs, if I was trying to go Houston?

Thanks for the comments.

McCombs is going to have the most consistent placement into Houston. Though I don't think you could go wrong with any of these.
