Can I get into IB from STEM major?

I'm a freshman studying petroleum engineering at UT Austin. Do I need to get a dual-major in McCombs or what do I need to get into IB? I understand I'd be a better fit for maybe Houston banking. I haven't applied to the prestigious finance clubs but I will next semester.

As far as getting an internship as a freshman, what should I do? Might end up working in oil & gas this summer. Will that hurt me? Just looking for genuine advice on what the next steps should look like for me.

I started learning all the technicals and emailing alumni for a coffee chat.

Besides that, I'm like every other teenage guy. I want to work in PE. Would starting in O&G IB be better than a regular O&G job?

Breaking into IB from a STEM major like petroleum engineering is absolutely possible, especially at a school like UT Austin, which has strong ties to Houston energy banking. Here's a roadmap based on the most helpful WSO content:

1. Leverage Your STEM Background

  • Your petroleum engineering background is a unique asset, particularly for energy-focused investment banking roles in Houston. Banks value technical expertise in oil and gas, so this could set you apart from traditional finance candidates.
  • Highlight your analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as any technical knowledge that could be relevant to energy banking.

2. Consider a Dual Major or Minor

  • While not mandatory, adding a finance or accounting minor/major through McCombs could strengthen your profile. It signals your commitment to finance and provides you with foundational knowledge.
  • If a dual major isn’t feasible, focus on taking key finance courses and mastering technical skills through resources like the WSO Elite Modeling Package or other financial modeling courses.

3. Join Finance-Oriented Clubs

  • Apply to prestigious finance clubs at UT Austin next semester. These clubs often provide access to networking events, mentorship, and technical training, which are critical for breaking into IB.
  • Even if you don’t get into the top clubs initially, stay persistent and look for other finance-related organizations or opportunities to build your resume.

4. Freshman Internship Strategy

  • Securing a freshman internship in oil and gas (O&G) won’t hurt you. In fact, it can be a stepping stone to energy IB, as it demonstrates industry knowledge and work experience.
  • If possible, also target unpaid internships at boutique investment banks or small firms. Cold-email alumni and local firms, emphasizing your interest in finance and willingness to learn.
  • Use the summer to build your technical skills (e.g., financial modeling, valuation) and network aggressively.

5. Networking and Alumni Outreach

  • Continue emailing alumni for coffee chats. UT Austin has a strong alumni network, especially in Houston energy banking. Focus on building genuine relationships and learning from their experiences.
  • Attend as many networking events and info sessions as possible, particularly those hosted by Houston banks.

6. Starting in O&G IB vs. Regular O&G Job

  • Starting in O&G IB is a better path if your ultimate goal is private equity (PE). IB provides the transactional experience and financial modeling skills that PE firms value.
  • However, if you can’t secure an IB role immediately, working in a technical O&G role can still be valuable. Use it as a stepping stone while continuing to network and build your finance skills.

7. Long-Term Focus

  • Maintain a strong GPA (ideally 3.7+).
  • Prepare for technical and behavioral interviews early. Resources like WSO’s Investment Banking Interview Prep can be invaluable.
  • Stay consistent with your networking efforts and keep refining your story about why you’re transitioning from petroleum engineering to IB.

By following these steps, you’ll position yourself as a strong candidate for energy IB roles, which can serve as a launchpad for your ultimate goal of working in PE. Keep hustling, and you’ll get there!

not sure about the specifics of UT Austin but as long as you know your technicals and nail behaviorals i don't see how your major can be a problem.

as long as your are joining the clubs, you are doing your networkings, you are totally fine
