Can you learn to lie or is it an inate ability?

You learn early on in school that lying is bad. But after having been in the workforce for several years, lying goes on all the time. I've worked at a few places at this point. Just like you're not suppose to curse ("fuck" is usually said a few hundred times at my office, by including execs).

I've seen lying used effectively for: closing deals, keep clients impressed, employee management, etc. The type of lying I'm talking about isn't fraudulent/Ponzi scheme like. Maybe white lie or fake it till you make it are more accurate phrases.

What do you guys think? Recently I switched over to biz dev and I'm anxious because I typically suck at lying. Can I improve at it or are people born as "used car salesmen"?

You can learn. Controlling tone, facial expressions and other subtle things that make a lie good can be worked on. Starting with gullible people and moving on to trying it with no-bullshitters is also a good way of practicing. Generally, I wouldn't recommend attempting to become a professional liar because it'll backfire at some point. Learning factual omission or spinning/twisting the truth is a less immoral and more valuable skill IMO.
