ivey has people everywhere, huge presence at every investment bank in toronto and a strong NY/LA alumni pool as well

Top undergrad program in Canada to get into IB or consulting in the US and Canada

I'd vouch for Laurier as second. In my adv corp fin class in my final semester this year, approx 10 of 40 had been recruited to banks and boutiques.

How about for calgary jobs? Do all the grads from those schools take them too, or is it possible to get into ibanking from U of C, U of L, or U of A? Also, what are the smaller banks to go for if the big canadian banks won't even give you an interview?

I have a friend thats an HBA Ivey alum. He started IB after grad as an analyst and is now an assoicate at same firm.

As for Calgary IB jobs? You can get into IB if you know your material, regardless of what university u came from, as long as u are a grad. Job market there is INSANE especially for IBankers of all positions!!!

GMP (just done deal with Lazard), CIBC, Blackmont, Scotia, NBF, MGI, RayJay, Peters, Jeffries....I could go on. Plus word is that a number of US BBs are looking to set up shop there.

Depends if you're looking for a sector team or a generalist position - different shops better for different areas

I will soon be desperate to get into any sector that would be willing to take me at entry level...If you really don't mind, would you go on (ignoring the firms that don't hire fresh grads)

how does one apply for boutique firms? i understand the BB hiring process but how can you get in touch with boutique firms in Calgary if you do not have any alumni from your school there and i dont have any connections. any advice is greatly appreciated!

how come nobody has said anything about Schulich? Didn't FT and Forbes rank this quite high? Even higher then all the other Canadian schools? Don't get me wrong i think Ivey is probably the best imo but why did FT and forbes give Schulich such a high ranking? any thoughts?

Ivey riding on its legacy.....

As for getting in touch with shops, if you don't have any alum contacts, I'd just go for an internship and work your way in that way. Maybe talk to their HR depts and find out if they're working with any HHs and go talk to them. Calgary mkt is hot right now, looking for bright people so if you fit the bill you'll be snapped up.

Still the best ugrad business school. You are referring to the Ivey MBA rankings. Not nearly as good as it used to be, i think mainly because of distance from Toronto. I'd say go to Ivey for undergrad then go somewhere in the US for MBA. UT / Schulich might be better MBA bets too.

Ivey placed 5 guys at goldman, 7 to CS, 4 to UBS etc. last year out of HBA. Legacy or reputation or whatever its riding off of, no other canadian school is close from an analyst recruiting perspective.

Best Response

3 to UBS / CS LA - there's been enough said about UBS LA, but CS is almost as good in LA.

2 to GS NY, JPM NY etc, 3 to CS San Fran, CS NY in there etc.

MS and ML are only for Toronto. This is about as good as you are going to get for a canadian school due to mainly Visa issues.

If you are a good student you can push into NY tho. I know someone who got Citi, Leh, MS, GS, Blackstone interviews for full time before deciding on Citi NY.

Hands down, Ivey is the way to go for any Ibanking / Consulting job.
It has a very tight alumni group and basically all ibanks come to recruit at Ivey, even those from the states (GS, JPM, etc.)

Queens would be second. Not sure after that, its probably all the same.

An 2nd year analyst from Ivey is the best one in his class of ~100. He is better than kids from Wharton, Harvard, etc. This is the feedback received from not only superiors in his group, but also from senior MD's in Sponsors, Healthcare, Real Estate, and Tech. FYI, he has already secured a job for next year with a major PE Shop (i.e. KKR, Blackstone, TPG, Carlyle).

BTW, he's a fun person to hang out with and doesnt sweat banking all day.
