Canadians (or others on visas) that got fired / laid off
Curious to hear stories or experiences of people that were in the U.S. on a work visa and got laid off or fired.
I’m a Canadian on TN that requires me to leave the US in 60 days if I don’t find another job (similar requirement for H1B). Bank is doing cuts. My performance is pretty mid-bucket, I’m no super star. My group has struggled to close stuff this year, so slightly nervous.
People that were in the U.S. on visas and got fired or laid off, how did it work out for you? Did you just go back to your home country for a bit and move back later (or just stayed there)? Did you find another job in 60 days? Did you down market just to find something quickly? Did your bank give you a heads up so you can start looking to have a smoother transition (assuming performance wasn’t the key issue)?

Take whatever you can in the US to stay there. Corp dev, strategy and ops whatever, just don’t come back to Canada. That should be your goal, you can figure it out afterwards just don’t come back to Canada it’s a shit show.
If someone gave you the option to become a US citizen right now but you had to give up your Canadian citizenship as well, would you do it?

I can’t think of anyone saying no if they’re in this industry are are career / monetarily driven (which most people in this industry are)
Once you go down there you’ll never want to come back. Anytime you hear Canadians come back and say “it was too expensive, lifestyle was better in Canada, etc” it’s usually a spinoff covering that they were fired.
All the Canadians I know that went home for Covid are back. Canada sucks
I used to love it when I was younger. But the economic situation there is just very bad for young people.
Have you considered marrying a US citizen?
If I find someone sure (dating around). But not like you can pick on up at Walmart and wouldn’t marry someone just for the GC.
