Career advice needed. Please help

Hi all. I am ambitious third year student in an average European university currently making internship at one of the BIG 4 companies in Hungary. However, I am much more excited about the career in investment banking on Wall Street or Canary Wharf, but the problem is that I am not coming from a targeted university and know only one person (not that much) who works in investment banking department in a company in San Francisco. He told me that it is advisable to get a Master’s degree from a Top Business School, otherwise the chances are very limited. But I do not have money for a Master’s at the moment, so I am not able to take advantage of this opportunity. There are some other talented and very smart people from my university who are reading this blog and are looking forward for your specific advice.

So let me tell you a bit about my education. Actually:

  • I am studying Finance and Accounting
  • have good marks
  • participated in a local university scientific conference and got 2nd place
  • was exempted two times from the tuition fee
  • speak three languages
  • planning to pass CFA level 1 next year in December to increase my chance to get a job (if it helps in reality)

When I read the blog I see many times the posts about networking. I have a question regarding this. How can I take advantage of networking if I am currently not living in a big financial centre? How the process works and whom to write? My background probably will not sound that impressive for a GP Morgan or Goldman Sachs recruiter as I am not a native English speaker and coming from one of the poorest countries in Europe.

However I will do my best to increase my chances and interested in your opinion whether it is possible for an undergraduate to get an analyst position in a prestigious investment bank. In addition if it is possible I would like to know, what specific books to read, maybe any additional specific courses to take in order to make my resume look more competitive. Looking forward for your comments. Thanks in advance.
