CFA Level I Candidate line on the resume

How cringe is it? And how many people throw your resume away when they see it? Is the problem the CFA or the "candidate" part?

I would also assume that people that actually hold the certification would appreciate it. At least some of them.

Currently enrolled in the program and would love to get some feedback.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, listing "CFA Level I Candidate" on your resume can be a double-edged sword. Here's the breakdown:

  1. Perception of "CFA Level I Candidate":

    • Many professionals, especially those who have completed the CFA program, view this as premature. It essentially signals that you've paid the fee but haven't achieved anything yet. This can come across as trying too hard to impress without substantial accomplishment.
    • Some argue it "indicates interest," particularly for candidates with non-finance backgrounds aiming to pivot into finance. However, this is not universally appreciated.
  2. When It’s Acceptable:

    • If you're actively preparing for the exam and have no other finance-related credentials, it might be worth including. However, it’s better to focus on other achievements or skills that demonstrate your commitment to finance, such as research reports or technical skills.
  3. Advice from WSO Threads:

    • A better approach is to wait until you've passed Level I before adding it to your resume. Passing Level I signals dedication and a basic understanding of finance, which is more likely to garner respect from hiring managers.
    • If you do include it, ensure it’s formatted correctly and adheres to the CFA Institute's guidelines. Misrepresentation or improper formatting can reflect poorly on your attention to detail.
  4. Impact on Resume Screening:

    • While it’s unlikely to get your resume outright discarded, it may not add significant value. Hiring managers often prioritize tangible achievements and relevant experience over incomplete credentials.

In summary, tread carefully with "CFA Level I Candidate" on your resume. If you choose to include it, make sure it’s not the focal point and is supported by other strong qualifications or experiences.

CFA Institute allows the term CFA Level 1 Candidate, but it actually just means that one has registered for the level 1 exam. Candidates passed the exams can use the designation "CFA Level X Passed". All other versions are in violation of CFA rules, e.g. "CFA Level 2", "cleared CFA", "Level 1 Chartered Financial Analyst".

But yeah, I would pass on anyone who list it incorrectly or list they are "level 1 candidate".
