Chinese Names - Bankers Email Format
Hi there, I am trying to reach out to some bankers via their bank emails to network. I know that the format is usually [email protected], at least for the banks I am interested in. I'm struggling however to figure out how this could apply to Chinese bankers whose full name on LinkedIn consists of three parts. Apologies in advance but I don't speak Chinese and hence don't understand the naming convention. Where the 'middle name' goes then? To the surname, or first name, or is it ignored in the email?
In Chinese, the last name comes first, followed by the given name (which is typically two characters, so there is no middle name). For Mao Ze Dong, Mao is the last/family name, and Ze Dong or Zedong is the "first/given name."
In Western countries, some Chinese people just reverse the order to fit the English name order: [email protected].
That said, the vast majority of Chinese bankers have an English name, so you'd be probably emailing steve.mao etc. I'd assume this is especially true outside of China, and if you don't speak Chinese you probably have no reason to be contacting China-based people anyways.
Thanks for the reply, really helpful! I'm based in Europe but the bankers I refer to have only Chinese names, at least on LinkedIn, even though they work in Europe as well. I don't know what name they use in the office so I'll stick to their Chinese name and see if the emails go through.
As someone who got cold contacted by potential applicants, it weirded me out when I got emails from people I never gave my email to, even if it was easily discovered. I preferred (and mentally more positively responded to) linkedin messages, especially where applicants added a personalized note (ie. brief background and why they are reaching out).
Thanks for your comment - interesting to hear your perspective. My personal experience on LinkedIn has been really bad as people often read but don't respond to messages so that is why I started trying to reach out to their work emails. I understand what you mean, I guess I could be a bit surprised as well if I was the recipient but unfortunately too many people rarely use/don't reply on LinkedIn for whatever reason
