Clinical Research to IB

I’m currently working as a clinical research coordinator for a global research team at a well-known cancer hospital. Although I initially planned to apply to medical school next cycle, my experiences in the field have led me to reconsider my career path. With a biology and economics undergraduate degree (from a well-known but non-target liberal arts college) - where I also managed a student investment fund - I have some modeling experience and a solid foundation in finance.

After careful reflection and discussions with several professionals, I’ve decided to pursue a role in healthcare investment banking. I've heard that starting in biotech equity research might offer the path of least resistance. In my current role, I’m responsible for collecting, cleaning, analyzing, and summarizing data for academic publications and grant proposals; I also interact with patients on a daily basis. Working within an international team has provided valuable insights into the complexities of pharmaceutical and biotech involvement in global clinical trials and drug sales. I do not, however, have an advanced degree

I’d appreciate any feedback from anyone who has made a similar transition or who knows someone with experience in this area. Specifically:

  1. Is starting in equity research a strategic move for someone with my background?
  2. Would pursuing an MBA significantly enhance my prospects, or are there viable alternative routes?
  3. What additional skills or experiences should I focus on developing during this transition?

Given the current economic climate, I do not plan on making any career moves for the next 18 months, so I’m taking this time to gather insights and better prepare my next steps.

Thank you in advance for your advice!
