You are in school. You won't get pigeonholed. It is very easy to articulate why this change. You have all this experience, and you don't want to be in this energy space.
If you get a generalist role, they likely won't just give you energy projects. It is definitely a non-zero risk, but it is unlikely. While you clearly do have energy experience, you are still in school. And a rising sophomore at that. You don't have any experience sufficient to pigeonhole you.
You do realize that renewables and energy transition has received a TON of interest and investment on the street recently, correct?
Eventually you’ll get pigeonholed into something so why not bite the bullet sooner rather than later. Maybe I’ll get shit on for that but it’s the truth. With that being said, we will always need energy. It’s not as sexy as tech but as long as there is humanity, there will be a need for energy. On top of that, we’re witnessing the first energy transition not only of our lifetime but of multiple peoples lifetimes. This will only increase attention and investment into the energy sector as a whole. On top of that, as the US pulls out of the Middle East and we see increased tensions due to the power vacuum this creates, energy independence could become even more of a talking point than it was post Ukraine war. If that isn’t convincing enough, the world (ex. EU/Macron) is starting to wake up to the potential that nuclear could have for clean cheap energy production.
If I had to pick an industry to pigeonhole myself, energy would be at the top of my list. Maybe view it as specializing in a space and finding a niche rather than ‘pigeonholing’
.
I think it’s worth debating for sure, even before you have offers. I was only able to make inroads and start landing offers once I felt enough conviction in my niche that I could speak to it confidently. It is difficult until then because you really just can’t fake passion and genuine curiosity.
That being said, you have (some) time on your hands to explore this, I would have as many conversations as you can to develop a sense of where you’d feel most comfortable positioning yourself for the next 5-10 years. If I can help at all, feel free to reach out
.
On the contrary, to be honest you are probably a great candidate in one of the more interesting/growing groups, that being energy/sustainability/sustainability tech.
Regardless, you’re still in undergrad - pretty much impossible for you to have pigeonholed yourself anyways
