Contacting a contact for updates
Hi,
I have a contact in NYC. He's a high up lawyer in M&A in a corporate law firm and he has decided to help me. I sent him my resume about 3 weeks ago and had a telephone conversation with him, in which he asked me what I was looking for (IBD spring internship) in NYC (I live in London doing my MSF and want to move). He's sort of a family connection, as in my mother's friend's brother in law. He has explicitly said he wants to help me find something.
It has been around 3 weeks now of no contact, and I want to send an email to him so that he knows that I have not stopped caring. The reason I didn't do it so far is that based on the situation of him wanting to help me, I didn't want to put pressure on him like "Have you done it yet? Have you done it yet? Have you....?".
Can you please suggest how I could contact him? I already sent him a thank you email the day after our telephone conversation.
Btw, he's a really nice guy and not at all arrogant, if that changes anything about how I should write the email. Also, I called him by his first name since I thought it would be more appropriate.
Please help me on this. Thanks!
If it were me...
"Hey derp, hope you're doing well. I'd just like to follow up with the conversation we had about X a few weeks ago. I'd love to talk more; let me know if you're free sometime for a phone call. Thanks!"
something like that
Thanks, but I'm not sure that's appropriate because what we talked about a few weeks ago was the fact that he was going to give my resume to his friends and "see if he can sort something out". More thoughts?
have u tried looking to off-cycle internships in london? not a lot of BB's have off-cycle programs in the US, so you will most likely end up working at a boutique for the spring.
no one is going to hand you an internship, I would follow up and let him know you are still interested. maybe ask him to introduce you to a couple of his contacts?
This sounds like a good situation to call him. Say what's up and update him on what you've been thinking.
Idk why people are so afraid of phone calls.
He's extremely busy though, Last time I called, I was lucky because I "called him at a time when he had a few minutes to spare". And still, we had to pause the conversation because he had to respond to an email from a managing partner. So calling him out of the blue might be slightly on the annoying side for him.
Btw, I really don't mind working at a boutique. What I want is to get IB experience, specifically to develop my modeling skills, as I find the work really interesting. And experience at a boutique IB in NYC would still look great on my resume in Europe.
