cornell brooks for IB/MBB

im a senior in high school who just got into cornell brooks school of public policy

how doable is it to recruit into IB, consulting, or PE?

I would prefer IB but I feel all the Dyson kids are going for that; I have no clue how I'd fare here

literally any information would be so valuable

I would also declare a minor in Dyson, but I hear Dyson has so few spots that it would be hard to internal transfer. I'd try internally transferring to Nolan, however, as I've heard that's much easier.

I apologize for how uninformed this is, and if I'm asking anything incorrectly; just looking for some advice! thank you

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

Cornell Johnson (MBA level) is highly regarded for its investment banking (IB) recruiting, with structured processes for nearly every top firm, including BBs (Bulge Brackets) like JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley, as well as EBs (Elite Boutiques) like Evercore and Lazard. However, your situation as a high school senior entering Cornell Brooks School of Public Policy is different, and the path to IB or MBB (McKinsey, Bain, BCG) consulting will require strategic planning.

Key Considerations:

  1. Dyson Minor and Internal Transfers:

    • Dyson is highly competitive, and internal transfers are notoriously difficult due to limited spots. Declaring a minor in Dyson could help you gain exposure to finance-related coursework, but it won't carry the same weight as being a Dyson major.
    • Transferring to Nolan (Hotel School) is reportedly easier, but it may not provide the same direct finance or consulting recruiting opportunities as Dyson or Johnson.
  2. IB Recruiting from Non-Dyson Schools:

    • While Dyson students may dominate IB recruiting at the undergraduate level, it's not impossible to break in from other schools at Cornell. Networking will be critical. Leverage alumni connections, especially those in IB or consulting, and start building relationships early.
    • Joining finance-related clubs or organizations on campus can also help you gain relevant experience and access to recruiting pipelines.
  3. Consulting (MBB) Recruiting:

    • Consulting is generally more competitive than IB, as noted in other WSO threads. If you're aiming for MBB, focus on maintaining a high GPA, developing strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and participating in case competitions or consulting clubs.
  4. Alternative Pathways:

    • If you find it challenging to break into IB or MBB directly from Brooks, consider pursuing an MBA at a top program like Cornell Johnson later on. Johnson is known for its strong placement in IB and offers opportunities to recruit at nearly every top firm.

Actionable Advice:

  • Network Aggressively: Start reaching out to Cornell alumni in IB and consulting roles. Use LinkedIn and alumni databases to connect with professionals who can provide guidance and potentially refer you during recruiting.
  • Join Relevant Clubs: Participate in finance, consulting, or investment clubs to gain practical experience and access to recruiting events.
  • Excel Academically: A high GPA will be crucial for standing out in competitive recruiting processes.
  • Pursue Internships: Seek internships in finance or consulting-related roles during your undergraduate years to build your resume and demonstrate interest in the field.

While being in Brooks may not provide the same direct recruiting advantages as Dyson, with strategic planning, networking, and persistence, you can still position yourself for success in IB or consulting.

Undergrad school is pretty much irrelevant as long as it's not something way out there like vet. Dyson, Hotel, Arts, Brooks, ILR, are all perfectly fine. Personally know multiple people from Brooks with great offers.

Don't worry about it, don't feel like you need to transfer to Dyson, and if you do look to transfer it's actually pretty easy (just get a high GPA)

oh really so something like goldman or JPM for IB or mck for consulting is doable from brooks? i worried i'd get like resume mogged by dyson kids lmao

i just said JPM and mck as examples, my bar for "great offers" are obv lower

There's zero difference in potential outcomes between Dyson and Brooks. Zero advantage with Dyson. I know that's hard to believe but it's true.

It's fine not being in dyson. What are your other offers? I would take a school on the level of stern/northwestern over cornell (even dyson).
