Corporate Banking Analyst 1 Final Interview with MDs

I have a final round new grad AN1 interview for corporate banking at an American BB at their foreign office (think London or HK). I came in with an internship from a MM M&A IB shop. I wasn't asked any technicals during the 2nd round with VP and Associates.

Final round is with MDs from two different groups and the head MD for 30 minutes each. One MD is from RM another is from PM. What kind of questions should I be expecting at this level, I assume mostly behavioural again?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know for your final round interview with MDs for a Corporate Banking Analyst role:

  1. Behavioral Questions:
Since you weren't asked technicals in the second round, it's likely the MDs will focus on behavioral and situational questions to assess your fit, personality, and ability to handle high-pressure situations. Examples include:

    • "Why corporate banking?"
    • "Why this bank and this specific office?"
    • "Tell me about a time you worked on a team and faced a challenge."
    • "Describe a situation where you had to collaborate with a difficult colleague."
    • "How do you handle feedback or criticism?"
  2. Relationship Management (RM) Focus:
The MD from RM may ask questions related to client interaction and relationship-building skills, such as:

    • "How would you approach building relationships with clients?"
    • "What do you think makes a good client relationship manager?"
    • "Tell me about a time you had to persuade someone or manage a difficult client."
  3. Portfolio Management (PM) Focus:
The MD from PM might focus on your understanding of credit risk, portfolio management, and analytical skills. While technicals may not dominate, you should be prepared for questions like:

    • "How would you assess the creditworthiness of a client?"
    • "What factors would you consider when managing a portfolio of corporate clients?"
    • "Tell me about a time you had to analyze a large amount of data to make a decision."
  4. High-Level Fit and Strategy Questions:
The head MD may focus on your long-term goals and alignment with the firm's culture and strategy. Questions could include:

    • "Where do you see yourself in five years?"
    • "What do you think sets our bank apart from competitors?"
    • "What do you hope to gain from this role?"
  5. Preparation Tips:

    • Be ready to discuss your internship experience at the MM M&A IB shop and how it translates to corporate banking.
    • Use the SOAR framework (Situation, Obstacle, Action, Result) to structure your answers for behavioral questions.
    • Research the bank's recent deals, strategy, and market position to tailor your responses.
    • Prepare thoughtful questions to ask the MDs, such as:
      • "Can you share a recent deal or client relationship that you found particularly rewarding?"
      • "What qualities do you think are most important for success in this role?"

Good luck! Remember, MDs are looking for someone who is not only technically capable but also a strong cultural fit and eager to contribute to the team.
