Could Joining a Private Members' Club Help Me with break into IB?
I’m a first-year at a high semi-target (Durham/Bristol/Nottingham) going into second year, and I’ve done a spring week at a MM bank (HSBC/BNP Paribas/Santander), who will be recruiting for SA's for 2026 relatively soon. I am curious as to whether joining a private members club in London would increase my chances of breaking into IB.
To be clear, I don’t mean (Soho House/The Ned/Annabel's/etc), I mean more traditional clubs (The Reform Club/East India/Carlton/etc). Some people in my family are already members of some of these kinds of clubs and have friends who I know who are members of others, so the nomination aspect shouldn't be too difficult for me. However, I doubt that I could get into the likes of White's or Brook's.
I'm curious as to whether becoming a member would be helpful in terms of recruitment (although I am heavily considering becoming a member for other reasons too), such as networking, having somewhere respectable to take an analyst or someone out for a drink or dinner if I was to secure a spring, etc.
Would joining these clubs have any impact on my chances of breaking into IB, or is it better to join them for the social and personal benefits instead? Would the networking and prestige help, or is it a bit more of a status symbol than a practical career tool?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
Honestly, if you're looking to join these clubs just to get a foot in the door for IB, you're probably better off focusing on being a genuinely strong candidate rather than relying on creative ways to "nepo" your way in. IB is competitive, and at the end of the day, they want people who have the skills, experience, and drive, not just access to fancy clubs or connections through family.
Networking can help, but it’s your ability to demonstrate you’re a solid candidate that actually gets you ahead. Forget the status symbols and focus on building your CV and skill set. That’s what’ll actually make a difference in the long run. (Though, with the rise of nepo hires and DEI initiatives, maybe it's not entirely about merit anymore)
Ahhh, now we see why conversions from summer to FT have went down now.
Hey man, will be starting at a strong semi-target in the UK this September.
Would love to connect, and hear more about you and how you’ve navigated recruiting, send me a pm!
Congrats on Exeter
