Covid Analysts-Now Associates Are Horrible

Guys, just want to get your thoughts on this & if you belong to the people listed in the title, please ponder on this.

The covid hires who went associate on my group are completely absurd. Now I understand that IB is a demanding and intense job. I know that even pre-covid people were clocking 100+ hour weeks. But just based off what I see in my group, these people have a special vendetta out for any new hires who have things outside of being trapped in their rooms all day. I honestly can't even pick up dinner without a ding coming in to "check in on progress". The ASO right above them are perfectly fine and understanding that there are times to push and times to take it a little easier. I feel like since that particular class as analysts was government-mandated to stay inside all day, and WFH became work 24-7 from your desk, they have the same unreasonable expectations - even when there isn't stuff to do. They just can't seem to snap out of the fact that COVID is done and people can go out and resume their lives again. Is this a trend that you guys have seen across your groups?

If you began your career during COVID, please take this litmus test. Do you prefer working from your home office or your actual cubicle? If you would rather work from your home office, and leave the actual office around 6-7pm daily to plug in at home -- guys you are killing us. I have no problem with sitting at my desk til midnight daily. I can even crank out the 3ams in the bullpen when there's a significant amount of work. But this, "always be available on teams, always be online at home, don't pick up dinner outside just get it delivered to your doorstep" stuff has got to stop.

First of all:

- You’re a first year, you don’t have the best judgement

- No problem with WFH…

- Because someone sends you a message on weekend or at 2am doesn’t mean you need to respond immediately in all cases

- Don’t stress when people chase while you’re having dinner, you can ignore for 20mn

- It is their job to chase you

It is not their job to chase people who they know are eating.  If they're following up just because they know someone is eating (unless there's a very tight deadline), that's borderline socio.

Ah yes I definitely agree with that, but from his list it sounded like sometimes his associates were home and sending him emails when he was eating and he was getting annoyed about that

The only reason IMO if chasing analysts when eating is when the analysts take unreasonable amounts of breaks (ie when they are away from their desks half the times you go check in), then if you see they are taking an hour dinner break when you have a tight deadline it’s no surprise.

Otherwise yes of course everyone should have time to have quiet dinner, exercise etc as much as possible

Exactly, you can ghost someone WFH but can‘t ghost that person in office. Don‘t be a boomer
