Dartmouth Student w/ Nepo MBB Internship for SA 2027 - Advice?
Hey everyone, I’m a freshman at Dartmouth and will be interning at one of BCG/Bain in a major US office my freshman summer through a family connection. Completely understand that I’m in a very privileged position and intend to make the most of the internship and learn as much as I can.
How much will this help / how will this look on my resume for SA 2027 IB + buyside recruiting? Will it look bad / will I be asked how I got the internship since BCG and Bain don’t take freshman summer consulting interns? Or will it look good and help me get past resume screens and get interviews? Thanks for the help in advance!
Most of them will automatically think that the internship is a nepotistic one. Some will be impressed, some will dislike it, and the vast majority won't care and only care about what you actually did in the internship. Buyside post IB won't give a shit.
That’s helpful to know. Do you think it would help or hurt me more in aggregate to have it on my resume? I’m debating taking a small MM PE place instead but I thought the MBB brand (especially in a US office) would help me get past resume screens for recruiting. What would you do in my shoes?
I’d just take the MBB one for the bigger brand.
Its chill. Bankers like Constance:)
You're literally a dime a dozen among your Dartmouth cohort. Pound for pound, some of the most connection-laden network I've come across.
You won't stand out. It's a net positive. Take it and do a good job. No one will bat an eye at it being your freshman internship.
Got it, thanks!
You've been dealt a good hand and you're asking an online forum whether you should trade in that hand for a shittier one. A pair of aces is always better than a pair of tens no matter how you got the cards.
Don’t want to sound dumb / uninformed, but do you think having MBB will help me get more interviews for SA 2027 than doing MM PE freshman summer? I was thinking that MM PE would look less nepo and is more relevant to IB, but I understand that MBB is more prestigious and looks ‘better’. Would doing MBB over MM PE really make a meaningful difference in SA 2027 recruiting?
is the MBB in asia or USA? Is the PE firm in the USA?
I'd take this down Dartmouth is a small school and you're basically doxing yourself -- there's like two students that meet this description.
tbh most recruiters will be able to read through the lines when they see Dartmouth (which is full of nepos and heavily connected grads in finance) and Freshman MBB internship.
Is it a bad thing though, no. I’m sure you’ll come across the odd recruiter who just doesn’t like it for whatever reason, less so bc they “hate nepos” more cuz they are looking for ppl with “grit”/hardos and your nepo status gives the opposite impression. That’s the exception not the rule though, vast majority of firms will greenlight you for junior internships ,EOD every IB cohort needs their share of hardworkers who grinded intensely to get there and those that provide value to the firm through connections/experience gained through connections etc.
Speaking as the relative of a recent Dartmouth grad, even those that have little interest/aptitude for finance and coast on family provided internships will place into BB’s
