delay background check

I accepeted a BB SA offer before Christmas and the background check just started now (got an email about providing personal references etc....)

However, I am currently interviewing at other better BBs and should hear within a month (will renege previous offer if better things come up).

Does it matter if I make up something now for the back ground checking company about trying to get in touch with previous work manager hence can not give them a name/number immediately?

or would they be suspicious and make a big deal about it?

KB24TD21They'll make a big deal particularly if you end up reneging on their offer. The Street is small so be careful

How about if I coorporate with them...but try to delay the process as much as I can??

How serious could this be?

What's the point to delay the background check since you've already accept the offer? I assume that you will renege as long as you get a better offer. Then what's the difference between reneging with a background check and reneging without a background check? The end result is that you renege the offer. Whether you had the background check is irrelevant. Am I missing some points here?

It's gonna cost them quite a bit for the background check meaning they will not be happy if they start it and you renege.
