1.) Actually care / have interest about Energy: whether it’s Energy transition, renewables, traditional O&G, Power etc. (don’t just apply to apply bc u want to increase ur chances of breaking into IB)
2.) Know how energy markets work and the trends within them (i.e. what drives O&G prices, what’s driving renewables growth, future industry outlook, recent M&A trends etc.)
3.) Don’t bitch about being in Houston. Unless your in one of the groups that sit in NYC, most energy companies / clients are based in Houston so it is just what it is. Similar to how most TMT groups are West Coast based.
4.) Have a good personality and be enjoyable to talk to
Mostly 1 & 2 matter: the other things are identical to other IB sectors. Come prepared, have a good attitude etc.
Energy is pretty niche and as someone who does the recruiting for my group’s internship it is very obvious when someone is just applying to apply, these applicants are the worst kind. You also need to have a good reason for why energy (especially if you aren’t Texas based or don’t have a energy specific degree), “because my dad works in energy” isn’t a great answer.
Best of luck
