Attention to detail, not being insufferable, and knowing how/when to ask questions.
The bar is very low, you’d be surprised
I’ve been hearing ~10% return offer rates, is that really all it takes to go above and beyond?
10%? Buddy the requirement even at top firms is to have a pulse
Unless your group is going through a rough period return rates are usually 80%+
IB return rates are usually 80-90%, you just need to show up, be friendly and be willing to learn. Even in the worst years for IB (2022) return rates were still 60-70%+
Most people who don't get returns either decide quickly they don't want to do IB hours and it's basically mutual, or have attitude/work ethic issues.
Don't let the echo chamber of fellow college juniors get you down, they have no insider info
Being responsive, communicative, having some semblance of attention to detail, and a good attitude is all you need.
In most cases you will not be doing anything substantive, so just do your best with what you’re given and network internally a healthy amount with senior folks. Name of the game.

In a similar boat, does anyone have advice on materials or courses to take for the actual job itself? Don’t want to be completely clueless on the job but for some reason the 400q’s + guides + adventis FMC course doesn’t feel like it’s enough.
Good attitude, give good effort, ask questions, and be a team player. The bar is low, and most teams want to first make sure you’re a chill analyst, the technical skills come with time on the desk. Can’t teach personality but you can teach modeling.

Had the same concerns as an incoming SA but as others have said, the bar isn’t too high for interns. Main things I’d focus on is being very communicative, being prompt when responding to pings, offering to help with grunt tasks, and overall being a good person to be around. Ask smart questions and don’t make the same mistake repeatedly. Keep a notebook and pen with you at all times and write down every single instruction given
