It definitely can't hurt your standing with those places. The worst they can say is no, but if you don't ask there is no chance anyways. If they like you enough, they can definitely bring you in early, but you better have some good contacts.
Definitely let them know; I was in the same situation and a lot of places expedited the process. Also, coming from a non-target it can only help that they now know you have other options.
Just be polite and semi-honest and you are golden.
Agree with everyone else that it certainly can't hurt, and if you have strong relationships that will help. Ultimately some groups are willing to hire in the fall in special situations, some do a lot of hiring in the fall, and some won't hire in the fall no matter what. At my group they will not consider giving anyone a SA offer in the fall because it's very difficult to determine if you are getting the best kids without seeing a large pool of applicants, but I think these days that mentality is unusual.
