Do I even include insight series on LinkedIn/ resume
Please spare me the cringe comments and jokes, I know this is meme worthy and not significant experience or an accomplishment at all. I’m participating in a virtual insight series from a bb, that’s for freshman. Its 2 events a month from January to August.
I know how silly this looks and that it’s not very formal and doesn’t provide the same thing at all as an actual internship. So I’m sincerely wondering your opinions, should I put this a position or anything on my LinkedIn, if so in what way to avoid looking facetious or silly? (Obviously wouldn’t post just add to my Linkedin quietly if I did) Should I point to this in any way on my resume? Would it add any value or be a positive to help take up some space on a young list of experience? For some context I’m currently a transitioning veteran, freshman at a semi, with an actual boutique IB internship lined up for the summer I got through military connections. I have my military service, and another internship at a brokerage as experience on my resume. I plan to add the summer as an actual position, but wasn’t sure if this would also offer any further value. Thanks for any opinions or original thoughts
Totally fair question — I remember, while applying for internships, wondering how to counterbalance lack of experience / blank space on resume (and LinkedIn) with questionable inclusions / resume filler (and LinkedIn drivel). I think in your case, you’ve got plenty going on vs. your peers, and can err on the side of leaving it off LinkedIn entirely and being conservative in your display on your resume.
The series sounds more legit than the 1-day infomercials that kids throw on their LinkedIns, but to be honest, it’s become such an automatic eyeroll-inducing topic that you’re best just leaving it off your profile. Keep it as one line on the resume (not as a position) and have a good summary of and takeaways from the program prepped for interviews.
FWIW — and this is probably a somewhat myopic view coming from a junior employee — I can’t really think of much upside to having it on LinkedIn, even though it sounds like a decent program. Working backwards from the offer letter, 1) your LinkedIn doesn’t affect the interview process (everyone involved uses your resume at every step, where you’ll list it, briefly) one iota, and 2) people on LinkedIn won’t be more likely to network (which is the whole point of LI) unless they’re quite familiar with (and impressed by) the program, plus you run the risk of generating the aforementioned eye-roll if it reads something like ‘8 month semi-weekly virtual insight series at JP Morgoldman Stanley.’ You’ll also notice that most people at the analyst and associate level at top banks / with top degrees have pretty lean LinkedIn pages.
