Do MDs have direct subordinates

What I mean is do MDs have a group of people that they manage and directly report to them, or are they just heads or co-heads of a deal team and the deal team changes based on the deal that is being worked on? Isn't the first method better because it allows MDs to develop/train analysts the way the want and have consistent results? I know its a basic question but I'm an underclassman in college.

Generally no, unless it’s a VP or Director that they brought with them / is directly assigned to them. Not uncommon for say a BB MD to bring their VP/D with them to an EB, for example.

For Associates / Analysts you’re typically working with / allowed to be staffed with many different seniors. Even if most of your time is working on deals for a specific senior, they usually won’t be your direct manager that you would think about in a corporate setting.

At my EB, VPs specialize after their stub year, so there's usually 1-2 VP / EDs that work solely with that MD
