Do you get any referral power as an SA for next year's recruiting class?
Incoming 2020 SA here. Already, I have friends (who know about my offer) that are a year younger than me approaching me about recruiting advice, how to network, etc. They are all acting super interested in my firm, and it's obvious to me they are looking to get help at the place I'm at next summer.
When you're a SA, do senior people ever ask if you know anyone applying, or want to recommend anyone for the recruiting process? I know that even analysts/associates don't have that much power to help people and you need an MD/VP referral to really get a push, but if the candidate is qualified I figure a suggestion from me might be the difference between just getting a first round interview or not, and then from there it's up to them. Is it a big no-no as a SA to try to even get involved with recruiting? Curious what everyone else's experiences with this have been!
I had a friend at a EB when I was recruiting and he got me an invitation to a networking event (with 100+ other prospective applicants, so not that meaningful) but it was something. Said he gets no influence beyond that though.
If you haven't interned there yet, I'd say no. However, post internship (assuming you get the offer), I think it's fine to send a resume to the person in charge of recruiting. Did that a few times when I was an incoming full time myself. Your recommendation probably won't have much weight but it'll ensure your friend's resume gets properly reviewed.
What about during the internship? Most recruiting is in July/August now so I imagine it will be during my SA stint that they are doing recruiting. My thinking was that if senior people on your team are involved in recruiting they might casually chat with you (ie we are looking at a kid that went to your school, do you know him?) but I have no idea and just kind of imagined that scenario.
At my firm, lower BB, we have the power to rec candidates for SA/FT as full time employees. However as interns that really isn't there. It's great you want to help your friends out, but focus on doing well and landing a return offer, then help em out all you want once you start as a full time employee.
Thanks for the insight (SB) - totally agree my first priority is getting a return, was more just curious what the process is and if there's even an avenue to help. Can you rec candidates as a 'FT employee' right when you get a return offer (which could impact the class below yours recruiting cycle) or do you wait until you start (so you can only impact two years behind you)?
