Do you take cold networking calls from people you don’t know on Linkedin?

I’ve had more than a few undergrads and people in the industry message me cold on Linkedin asking to set up a call or inquiring about job opportunities at my firm. Generally if we have mutual connections/friends or they went to my college I’ll take the call, but if it’s someone with no connection to me who I don’t know at all, I tend to ignore it. I respect the hustle, but I also assume you’re only interested in what you can gain from me, and I don’t expect to benefit much from this relationship. Also, I’d be very hesitant to stake my name on a referral for someone I don’t know.

Curious to hear if anyone else has a rule of thumb for this or has a different opinion.

Personally I only reach out if we have something in common: connections, same school, same nationality (obvs not american if applying to US, english for UK).

I get the other side of people not taking the call because there will always be an 'ask' and that can just make things uncomfortable.

These calls with employees are so mundane so I respect those who actually take the time to reply to my email.
