Does a sophomore summer internship really matter anymore?

Hello,

Current sophomore at a low-semi target (that might be pushing it though). I have 2 relevant internships, 1 with a boutique sell side shop and another relevant finance one that I’ve done during the school year.

With recruiting so accelerated (most apps opening for SA ‘26 Dec-Feb ish), does it matter if I have a sophomore summer internship on my resume? Wouldn’t be on my resume before I apply for jr summer either way.

I guess if I manage to totally strike out with jr summer recruiting or don’t get a return and have to apply around then it’d strengthen my resume, otherwise don’t really see the need.

Any thoughts?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about the importance of a sophomore summer internship:

  1. Importance of Sophomore Summer Internship:

    • Legitimacy: Having a legitimate gig during your sophomore summer is crucial, especially in competitive pools or schools. It helps you stand out in the eyes of recruiting committees, even if your GPA is not top-tier.
    • Recruiting Timeline: Most sophomore internships start recruiting in February-April of your sophomore spring and don't require as extensive networking as junior positions. However, having a sophomore internship can be a significant advantage when applying for junior summer internships.
  2. Recruiting for Junior Summer:

    • Early Action Applications: Some analysts suggest not applying for early action applications if you don't already have a sophomore internship, as it can be seen as a red flag.
    • Networking: It's recommended to spend 60% of your time networking with regional/industry-specific boutiques for sophomore positions and 40% on top-notch firms for junior year. Start networking now for junior year and follow up periodically with updates.
  3. Case-by-Case Consideration:

    • Flexibility: Consider everything on a case-by-case basis. If you haven't landed a position for sophomore summer by February, it might be daunting to aggressively look for junior positions. However, people you have been networking with at top firms for junior summer won't expect you to have anything by February.
  4. Alternative Paths:

    • Non-IB Internships: If you can't get an IB internship for your sophomore summer, take an offer that best positions you for IB interviews next year. Small boutiques frequently don't have structured internship recruiting programs, so there might still be opportunities available.

In summary, while the recruiting timeline has accelerated, having a sophomore summer internship can still be very beneficial for your resume and future applications. It provides legitimacy and can strengthen your profile, especially if you need to apply again for junior summer positions.

For me, having 'Incoming Investment Banking Intern' has been a bonus while networking, and so far the talks I've had where I mentioned this upcoming internship lined up helped me establish good connections for my jr summer. Especially if it's a somewhat reputable boutique firm.
