Does Coverage Group Determine Destiny?

I know I'm getting really far ahead of myself, I'm hoping to use IB primarily as a way to save up a nest-egg and gain good experience before moving into CorpDev in my industry of interest. However, I'm somewhat worried that I won't end up in my coverage group of choice. If my personal interest is in consumer, for instance, but I end up in industrials, will that prevent me from exiting to CorpDev in consumer? Or does that not really matter?
