Does it matter if I don’t have a coach / sponsor at the bank?

I have been with my team for 2 years now, and despite fitting the criteria they’d need from me to stay at the firm and make VP and beyond, I feel like nobody is really invested in my growth and development. I get average ratings and I’m told my development point is to figure out what my development points are to be better than average. I’m wondering if it’s worth me staying here, as I know I’ll be promoted, etc, but I don’t feel anyone interested in my career and development. I want to know that I’m spending my time in a place that helps me maximise my quality as a professional and work experience / exposure.

Moving elsewhere is not guaranteed to fix this. Moving to PE could be an option but again no guarantees. Would a small, mid market PE be better?

It absolutely matters assuming Banking will be a career as opposed to an analyst or associate stint before going elsewhere and even then, it matters. Transitioning from doing (analyst/associate) to project management (VP) to business development (Director/MD) aren’t easy and having someone help you get up the curve matters. I’d look to go elsewhere. And I’d say sponsorship matters more as you get more senior, not less. The transition from running processes to generating revenue is difficult and there seem to be a lot of bankers who flameout at the Director level or have to downshift banks once or twice.
