Doing an SA in 2025 but graduating with a 1 year masters in 2026 - am I still allowed to do it as a masters' student?

Hi,

I am going to be doing a masters in the UK starting September 2025. The course is not an MFin or a Finance masters but I graduated from a target school last year after having a traumatic undergraduate experience (read below).

I have mitigating circumstances because I was a carer during COVID. I worked basic jobs in groceries to support my family and keep them going. I've only just started to open up about it after having an interview elsewhere and realised my situation is unique in light of the trauma I've suffered.

I read that for IB internships at EB and BBs that it is open to penultimate year undergraduates only. However, I don't know if this is always true because some masters' students from my university still get onto these SA programs (think JPM, GS, MS, PWP, CVP etc.)

Obviously, with my circumstances, it's a bit different because I have a reason that I never did an undergrad internship. If I had done one, I wouldn't have been able to support my family while my parents were receiving treatment. Now, extended family have moved to London to take care of us so I am able to now resume my career. However, I can't do an MFin or Finance masters' because I come from a low socio-economic background and scholarships won't cover the £30k fee I would need to pay to cover the remainder. I was thinking to reach out to HR next year to see if I can still be eligible and have my application flagged in light of my issues.

Does anyone here know if you can do an SA internship before you start your masters? If so, how does that process work?

I posted previously regarding S+T careers (hence the profile tag) but since the IB process is slightly different only towards undergrads, I wanted to post this second question for clarity since little info is available to find out more.

From what I know, you can do an SA internship before starting your masters but under certain conditions e.g. you do an SA internship in summer 2024, then study an MFin program in Sep 2024 for about 9-12 months (depending on program length + university in question), then join said firm post graduation in summer 2025.

In your case, I'd speak to HR/the hiring team or whoever deals with stuff like this and get your application flagged since your case is unique. Unfortunately I can't give you advice as I don't want to spread misinformation but I'll let others chime in.

Hey AnotherLondonMonkey,

That sounds encouraging, thank you! As I mentioned, an MFin won't be possible for me because of my low socio-economic background. The masters' that I am doing is closely correlated with my current degree (STEM) but I did also study corporate finance modules as electives as uni since they were free at no extra cost.

I see: in my case, it would be to do the SA in summer 2025, do a program in September 2025 and graduate 2026 to join the firm. Right now, my priority is just to see the next 6 months out re-developing my career and supporting my family as best as possible.

I'll contact these firms in Q2' next year ahead of the recruitment window to discuss it with them further! Thank you so much otherwise, SB for you!

Will also wait on other people to chime in as you said for further info.
