Drug culture

So i’m starting a Summer Analyst position at a top BB this year in London. Is the stimulant/drug culture really as bad as it has been made out to be? I’ve heard some horror stories from alumni that have previously done internships in New York, however what is the culture like in London?

Congrats on getting such a coveted internship. As someone a bit older and with a few (not many) years in the “real world”, I’d like to share some thoughts with you. First part will speak to cocaine as I believe that’s what you’re asking about, as it’s the main party drug I picture when I think finance bro party culture (I wear a vest every day and my job is 99% of my personality, so I am the finance bro here):

First off, drugs can be fun. Extremely fun. This is why you get addicted. Nobody does cocaine a third time because they didn’t like it the first 2. And let me tell you - particularly with cocaine, you don’t do one “bump” and stop. You’ll keep going until your “friend” takes the bag away, and when he does, you’ll ask everyone in a 20 mile radius if they have any. You’ll swear nobody can tell you’re high, but everybody over the age of 18 will know.

Secondly, drugs can take you to a wonderful place. This is the “high”. As I’m sure you’re aware, what goes up, must come down. I speak from personal experience that few things are as bad as the coke hangover the next day. Sure, 2 hours ago you were king of the world (whichever unlucky soul’s apartment you ended up at and stayed up until 5am because you’re coked to the gills and can’t sleep and just keep talking about random shit that I promise you nobody cares about), but you also pounded 15 drinks with no water (cocaine gives you the beautiful superpower of the liver that won’t stop”).

Third point, and then I’ll ramble some more: YOU CAN DIE FROM COCAINE, AND THE LIKELIHOOD OF DYING IS HIGHER THAN EVER BEFORE. Fentanyl is rampant and it is not an exaggeration what you see in the news (they don’t even speak on it as much as they should). I personally know people who have overdosed off just one bump of cocaine in the past 2 years. There was a Bank of America banker I believe who died in New York along with other finance professionals because they all had the same dealer who had laced coke.

I know people who take Addy before going out. These people are not people I would want to be. I took addy back in college for finals and studying, but that’s it.

Just saying all this to say that even if you aren’t a banker, if you go out to young 20’s bars anywhere in the world, people will be doing cocaine. I strongly advise to never do it. I haven’t done it in over a year, and every time I have 3+ drinks I start fiending. Why? Because it’s fucking awesome. But it’s so dangerous.

Do with my rant what you will. Best of luck in your internship. Please drink responsibly - this is a common saying but I believe people don’t actually listen to what it means.
