Drugs To Fight Obesity, Heart Disease and Diabetes
Given a typical investment bankers lifestyle (particularly in the junior levels), I am always amazed to discover what new drugs people take to stay awake and keep performance up. This article discusses drugs that help fight the three common diseases people can get from a long term IB lifestyle.
Arena is by now a household name following the June 27th FDA approval of it's anti-obesity drug candidate Belviq.
Amarin is developing AMR101 for treatment of very high triglycerides and eventually for high triglycerides as well.
Mannkind had a lead product candidate called Afrezza, which is an inhalable ultra-rapid-acting insulin.
Do you think, because of the changes in lifestyle in general, more people will take these drugs and pharmaceutical companies will experience even larger profit levels? Isn’t it better to sleep a bit less but hit the gym/eat well instead i.e. take a more natural approach?

Are bankers aware of EC (ephedrine + caffeine)?
Keeps appettite down, energy up, raises resting metabolic rate. Highly cheap and effective for weightloss / preventing weight gain.
EC's great but it's not miracle solution. Especially to somebody who doesn't workout.

Of course it is better to hit the gym or eat well. The issue is those take effort, and people want a miracle cure to solve their weight problems magically. If your chasing performance, you absolutely will take anything and everything you can because the incentives are there. That goes for banking, athletics and life in general. Have you seen those stupid salt shaker commercials for some silly weight loss drug that claims you can lose weight by sprinkling it like salt on whatever you eat? Like sensa or something I think. So yes, to answer your point, they will continue to take anything and everything they can to lose weight rather than put down the damn cheeseburger.
everyone uses adderall. keeps you awake and cuts appetite, perfect combo.
I think these weight loss pills will also accompany (rather, mandated by the FDA) step-by-step programs such as proper nutrition and exercising plans to encourage a healthy lifestyle post-treatment. Maybe from a public policy standpoint, it'll be a good first-step and realistic solution towards the fight against obesity. These pills won't help you lose 200 pounds anyways, it's designed to help you shed 5-15% of your your body weight.
I was pretty surprised the FDA even approved them in the first place, as obesity is not really a "disease".
But in terms of the sheer volume of obese individuals in the states (estimated at over 1/3 of the US population) and the accessibility of the drugs at a reasonable price, that alone will ensure profitability for the company. Heck, 5% market penetration of the obesity market will help the drug reach blockbuster status.
