Economic Consulting to IB

I’m looking to shift from economic consulting at an engineering firm (focus on utilities/govt) to IBD (public finance, M&A, ECM) with a focus on power & utilities. I’m open to any firm and not picky with deal sizes, as long as dealflow is good. Just want to be able to gain experience in the space and work on transactions. Anyone have any advice on how to make the transition?

Depends a lot on where you’re targeting. In major hubs like the US or London, the switch from economic consulting into IB (especially P&U coverage) is quite realistic if you position your experience around infrastructure, regulation, and valuation and push hard on networking for analyst/associate roles. In more local European markets, it’s tougher due to more traditional hiring and language requirements, so you might need a step in between (e.g., Big 4 TAS, infra advisory or a related platform).
