Energy IB

Currently a sophomore recruiting for 2025 SA and am interested in energy IB, are there any good primers or insights that current energy bankers have? I have read the M&I primers but was wondering if there were any better way to learn about the industry and what being an energy banker entails.

Here’s what I would recommend:

Get a hold of an online copy of both the Breaking into Wall Street O&G Valuation and the Nat Resources guides. Would be a nice supplement to the M&I content that you read.

Go to SellSideHandbook and read their content on the energy industry. There is a specific section on common O&G technicals that would be critical to cover.

Download the Oil Prices app and start familiarizing yourself with oil and nat gas prices over the last year and where they are headed. Glance at RBC Richardson Barr from time to time. Start looking into energy M&A deals

Start reading the WSJ energy section and supplement it with CNBC and Barron’s. Couple good trends to know about would be the geopolitics in Russia / Ukraine and upstream companies dividend over reinvestment policy. This is very important when you’re in a superday environment and expected to hold a conversation about the industry with senior bankers.

Drop a review of a previous internship you have on WSO and then get access to previous energy IB interview Qs. Consolidate a list and make sure you understand the concepts.

If you have an abundance of time this winter break, you can skim the long RBC O&G primer that’s floating online. A bit excessive but has helped a little.

Ask around for mock interviews. It’s important to be able to convey all the information you learn verbally in an interview setting.

Good luck!

Note: apologies about any formatting issues due to mobile

As someone in energy IB, this is excellent advice.
