EOY Bonus Question

Out of curiosity,

How do end of year bonuses work when someone joins a firm during the year? For example, if someone joins in July do they only see 50% of the traditional bonus they would see if they had started full time the first of the year? I am assuming this is how it works, but was not sure if that is the traditional payout or not. Thanks for the input in advance.
