Exercise vs Sleep

Hey monkeys,

For an intern at a BB in IBD is it worth sacrificing sleep for exercise? Say waking up 30 mins earlier every morning to go for a jog/some bodyweight exercises at home?

Will this ~ 30 mins less sleep harm or help in the long run? Less sleep is always a bad thing but could the exercise make you feel even more awake?

You see I feel like I can't do anything productive unless I've exercised within the last 24 hours.. But maybe I'm just weird.

"...Okay you know what? I'll do one!"

Depends how your body responds to exercise. Some people actually need exercise at the start of the day to fully wake up, gets their body ready and active for the long day. Others get exhausted before the morning's even started.

I am trying to stay committed to 10 pull ups, 10 pushups, 10 situps every morning and night...probably takes about 5 mins. Even then I am missing it some days hahaha. But, it does feel good when I do.

trying? 10 pushups? wot.

Cmon man that's nothing. Unless you do it for the mental aspect, your body will not really respond to that little exercise. but it's still better than most people so don't think i'm hatin on your swag.

I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.

hahaha...pathetic I agree! hahaha

Try to get a gym close to or even in the building you work in. Figure out what time most analysts eat and then get a quick workout in during that time. Of course let the analyst you work for know that you're at the gym. If you can convey that exercise is important for you most people will understand.

40 minutes a day for me is perfect. Not too strenuous but it gets a nice little sweat going. I do 12 on treadmill, 12 on elliptical, 16 stretching/sit-ups/weights.

Nah, I just like to stay in shape. But thanks for the unnecessary condescending tone.

I think this is something you need to judge on your own. I know some individuals who can get away with 3-4 hours of sleep a night and operate like a stone cold killer.

Me personally, I need 5-6 to feel good during the day.

If you can fit 30min of exercise in/day + get enough sleep to feel 'good', then that is the way to go. You overall feel better about yourself and getting a good workout in in the morning actually gives me more energy.. but if I had a bender till 3am the night before, then NO.. I would not goto the gym that morning :)

The human body is incredibly resilient and adaptable. Your primary focus should be on getting an offer and being a great intern but you should be able to incorporate 3 days of exercise into your schedule. Thats all you really need to stay fit at that age anyway unless your eating like Rosie O'Donnell at your desk all day. Also, dont miss out on opportunities to grab drinks with your colleagues after work as building personal relationships will go a long way when it comes time to make hiring decisions.

if you dont exercise like this, you're cheating me, your boss, your parents, and most of all yourself

I eat success for breakfast...with skim milk

During my summer I had to in order to keep my wits. I ran a few times in the morning but would run on the weekends and then once or twice a week after work. Sounds strange but Central Park is safe at night - well lit, decent police presence, and more people out there than you would think.

How do people have time to go in the middle of the work day? Walking + exercise + shower + change...that's at least an hour

i go every day during lunch..very simple

Working out at lunch is a great plan, it energizes you for the rest of the day. Most bosses aren't extremely anal about how long your lunch is as long as you are getting things done.
