Exit Opps From Large Foreign Banks in NYC (HSBC/BMO/Nomura)

Does anyone have any specific insight on the exit opps from m&a / lev fin groups from large banks such as (Nomura/HSBC/BMO)? Considering joining one of these banks full time and want to have realistic expectations going in. Specifically think about PE/HF opportunities. Thank you in advance!

It never hurts to refresh information. Don’t see why people always comment this on every post, especially since finance changes extremely quickly.

In my group, we had quite a few people lateral to large European banks (various groups, couple coverage teams, one guy to an advisory group). I’ve also seen one person go to a rating agency as a economic research analyst. A few went to a top 10 b-school. Also one very very competent person went to KKR as an associate.

Have not seen anyone go to hedge funds.

Which one of the banks listed in the title would be considered the best for exit opps/lateral opportunities

You probably won’t get MF PE, but I know tons of people who go from those banks to non-MF PE firms. Take a look on LinkedIn, I’m sure you find some people. There are obviously tons of HYP -> top IBD groups - MF PE peeps, but you’re not completely fucked. They’re decent opportunities, just work harder.

That’s one of my main reasons I was drawn to this particular bank. Their international presence is huge and it’s relatively easy to switch to another country.

Would working abroad benefit me in terms of looking for PE/HF opportunities. Or would you recommend trying to switch to a “higher ranked” bank in the states?

I'm sure it wouldn't hurt, it's all about acquiring knowledge / experience and displaying how you can apply it to the new role that you'd like. If anything you'll just have a more interesting life moving around experiencing new things.

These banks are nothing like each other.

BMO is probably your best shot as they are a middle market shop in the US. i don't think low MM PE would be impossible.

HSBC is all balance sheet and has a mid-tier corp banks so levfin might be okay.

I literally don't know what Nomura does or is good at. Most people just meme them, even other US J banks. So, no info on this.
