First IB Position at a Senior Associate Level Following Non-Traditional Career Path - Any Tips?
Hey Guys & Gals,
Long-time listener, first-time caller here. Next month I start a new position with a relatively small, early stage investment bank (nothing fancy, I know, but IB nonetheless). I'm 29-years old and my career path thus far would certainly be considered non-traditional (non-target university --> industry --> buyside --> IB). Given my age and experience to-date, I'm joining as a Senior Associate with the anticipation of being ramped up to VP relatively quickly.
While I understand the financial services world and have a good grasp of the industry I cover, I obviously don't have the specific IB experience someone at a Senior Associate/VP-level typically does (i.e., the Analyst --> Associate --> VP ladder). That said, I'd love to hear any general tips, suggestions, thoughts, etc., you all might have as to how I can best prepare myself to hit the ground running in this new role.
Thanks much!
Mistake I see most common in laterals is assuming your previous experience isnt valuable. Seen MBAs coming in getting run over by kids who graduated college a year ago. Dont have imposter syndrome - you belong in the seat, so run shit.
