First-Year Econ Student (Placement Year) — How Should I Spend My Time?

Hey everyone,

I’m starting Economics with a placement year at the University of Reading this September. I know Reading is a non-target, which makes it ever more important for me to hit the ground running.

Right now, my CV is basically blank aside from a bit of paper trading, so I know I need to build it up from scratch. I don’t want to waste my first year coasting. I’d rather use the time to develop skills, experiences, and habits that will actually move the needle for spring weeks, internships, and longer-term prospects. I’m still deciding which area of high finance I want to pursue.

If you were in my position, what would you focus on to make sure you’re not just another student from a non-target, but someone who is competitive and stands out?

Any advice would be appreciated.
