FP&A Good Freshman Summer Internship for IB Recruiting
I currently have an FP&A internship after my freshman year for this summer.
I was wondering compared to students working at boutiques, is this going to look good or mid on my application to investment banks?
An FP&A internship after your freshman year can be a solid starting point for investment banking (IB) recruiting, but it may not carry the same weight as a boutique investment banking internship. Here's how it stacks up:
Relevance to IB: FP&A roles provide exposure to financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting, which are valuable skills for IB. However, they lack the direct deal exposure and transaction experience that boutique IB internships typically offer.
Networking Opportunities: Students interning at boutiques often have better access to networking within the IB industry, as they are already in a relevant environment. FP&A roles may require you to work harder to build connections with bankers.
Perception: While FP&A is respected, boutique IB internships are often viewed as more directly aligned with the skills and experience banks look for in candidates. That said, having any finance-related experience as a freshman is still impressive and shows initiative.
Next Steps: Use this FP&A internship as a stepping stone. Focus on excelling in your role, learning as much as possible, and leveraging the experience to secure a sophomore summer internship in a boutique IB or another front-office finance role. Networking and demonstrating your interest in IB will be crucial.
In summary, while a boutique IB internship might be more advantageous, an FP&A internship is still a good foundation. It’s all about how you position your experience and build on it for future opportunities.
